Premarital Education

Why ?

Research suggests that almost 50% of all marriages will end in divorce and of those who remain married, half of them report to be unhappy in their marriage. It is also claimed that those couples that undertake pre-marriage education are 30% less likely to end up divorced, and happier in their marriages. Therefore, premarital or pre-marriage education is really important for all couples who are planning to live together on a permanent basis, irrespective of whether they currently have issues or not.

How does it help ?

For a fraction of the cost of a wedding, couples can learn skills and gain knowledge which will enhance their relationship and drastically reduce the chances of them separating in the future. They isolate important differences between themselves, which are likely to provide challenges for them throughout their marriage, and formulate a plan to manage these differences. These differences include different cultural backgrounds, religious beliefs, moral and ethic values, and expectations. Premarital education really helps to ensure that marriage is built on solid foundations.

Marriages / De-facto relationships break up for many reasons, however,  the research conducted over the past 20 years suggests that successful couples have similar problems to other couples, however, communicate and handle conflict between each other, much better. To reduce conflict, and to build a strong loving relationship, it is imperative that there is understanding and respect for each other’s life goals, expectations, individual differences, and gender differences, in terms of thoughts, feelings, and behaviour. In addition, it is vital that individuals learn to communicate in a manner that is positive, non-blaming, and respects their partner’s thoughts and feelings, particularly when conflict arises.

What's your success rate?

I have been involved in pre-marriage education and relationship counselling for over fifteen years. I have had many clients who have participated in my pre-marriage education program, and each of them have learnt new skills , and have been glad that they had undertaken the course.  I have had hundreds of couples who have seen me for marriage counselling and all those who have been willing to make changes, which are the majority of my clients, have been able to save their marriages. Most couples who see me for marriage counselling tell me that they wished they had seen me years before, and that their marriages have improved markedly.

I firmly believe that every couple that intends to stay together should take a course in premarital education prior to getting married, to ensure an enriching and long lasting relationship.
